Sooke to Port Renfrew to Duncan to Victoria to Port Angeles (US)

This ride had everything. Good roads, bad roads, bad traffic, a sidewalk maneuver, perfect scenery and meeting new friends.

I'm totally in love with Vancouver Island. It has so many appealing things, I could spend 2 weeks here. Observations:

  • Many bicyclists and cycle riders, reminds me of Amsterdam but with the Pacific NW beauty on top. Everyone respects the two wheelers.
  • Twisty, 1 and 1/2 lane roads and bridges
  • The early part of the ride paralleled the US Olympic Peninsula across the water
  • The route I took reminded me of 119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village only the scenery was 10x better
  • Began to get really worried about Bert's tires, front was "cupped" and I felt like I was riding on my Trek racing bicycle only I couldn't steer very well on the turns
Made my first stop at Port Renfrew, which is the the farthest point you can go on a paved road along the south part of the south side of the island. Arrived at a little funky roadhouse around 11:45. Unfortunately, approximately 50 motorcycles arrived within 15 minutes, so the staff was overloaded. I had a yummy salmon burger with 6 local oysters, but it took 2 hours for the meal (you can imagine, me-mister-you-got-no-more-than 10 minutes-to serve me), but it was ok, met some people and the view was pretty good. Spread some ashes here.

Left lunch and headed on. I needed to ride over the middle of the island, get back to the main highway and head for Victoria where I planned to take the ferry to Port Angeles, USA.

Arrived in Victoria and immediately caught in a cluster. It was concert day in the harbor and there was a huge accident in the middle of town. I was melting down (literally) and Bert was overheating as we sat in the middle if town. I pulled out my iPhone, figured out whet I was and did a move I practiced in Paris - up on the sidewalk (Bert loved it), dodge a few people, get to a cross street and we are in like Flynn. However, we still missed the ferry so I had a few hours to kill.
